Reunion

The Thorson family held a reunion August 2, 3 and 4 when descendants of the late great grandparents, Anton and Olava Thorson gathered. On Friday, August 2, 100 people signed the register in Weyburn. On Saturday, they travelled to Macoun where they were served a noon lunch at the rink, after which they formed a cavalcade and went to view the cemetery where the great grandparents are buried. They went on to tour the old homestead on W 1/2 32-4-9, northeast of Macoun.

They visited the Thorson School site (now the home of Elmer and Karen Vicary) where, as a remembrance, they dedicated a model replica of the school. Kim Thorson got everyone's attention by ringing the original school bell and Rev. Valerie From served as spokeswoman. Two former school teachers, Oscar Schindel and Bill Dowhanuik were in attendance. Many stories were shared and many pictures were taken.

At 4 p.m., they were joined by many more relatives and friends at Macoun rink for coffee, juice and cookies before travelling back to Weyburn for the remainder of the gathering.

Saturday night a dinner was enjoyed at the Elks Club followed by a sing-song with Jeff Looysen on violin & Mel Rainey on piano. Sunday Afternoon was spent playing softball at the South Weyburn School grounds. A wind-up picnic supper was held at the T. C. Douglas Calvary Centre in Weyburn.

In 1902 Anton Thorson and his wife, Olive Marie (Hanson) Thorson left Belgrade, Minnesota, and moved to their farm homestead northeast of Macoun, Saskatchewan (then N.W.T.). To mark the 100th anniversary of that event we held a Thorson Family Reunion in 2002. Below is a an edited article from the Estevan Mercury {Aug 28, 2002}about the reunion.
